The following guest post was written by Andrew, about his internship experience with us this summer.

As a student at North Carolina State University, I have learned there are many different directions a Horticulture student can go in the Green Industry. I have been working off and on in the landscape industry since high school and have had some great experiences, but this summer has provided me with opportunities I never expected. In the past, I mainly worked in residential landscaping, but this internship has exposed me to the commercial side.

During these past weeks, I have experienced all sides of the commercial business. I have worked on maintenance and enhancement crews, with Account and Enhancement Managers, and spent time with the sales team. Working with my Mentor, Javier, has allowed me to see more of the enhancement side of the business. I have helped him source materials for his jobs as well as work with his crew. Working with him, has turned a spark into a flame. I became interested in enhancements last summer but the level and amount of work I have done in the past weeks has really fanned my interest deeper into this area of the business. I have learned through these experiences and working with some of the Account Managers and my Mentor that I have an eye for enhancements, I can visualize a design in the ground before it is there and that is exciting!

Another area of the business I have enjoyed is speaking with clients, learning about their wants and coming up with solutions to their concerns. On one occasion, we arrived at a job site and started to install the plants. The client came out and wanted to change a few things but did not want to spend a lot more money. I was able to help my mentor re-work the plantings and come up with a solution the client was happy with.

Working for a large company has many benefits and has allowed me to experience all aspects of the landscape industry as well as make lifelong connections. But the people and the close-knit family feel at the Raleigh branch has made me feel like a member of a great team!
