On this inspiring campus beats the heart of the flagship facility for a major university hospital system. A place of healing and historic prestige, this premier medical facility is the constant recipient of industry accolades. Awards include Forbes ranking it among America’s Best Large Employers, the Beacon Award for Excellence in critical care units, and numerous Environmental Excellence awards from Practice Greenhealth.
The university health system’s officials chose Yellowstone Landscape due to our reputation for managing many other properties on campus. Another key was the ongoing relationship between the school and our Ohio general manager, a university alumnus who remains dedicated to service and making sure his alma mater is served with the very best care we can provide to them.
Challenges
This project presented distinct challenges and required extreme diligence as this campus sees an unbelievable amount of foot traffic. Furthermore, construction is nearly non-stop with facility upgrades and expansions, making it difficult to plan seasonal flower rotations and perform landscape maintenance on a constantly evolving property.
Perfection is expected and deserved though, as this prestigious facility is always in the spotlight due to its reputation in the medical world garnering media coverage. Achieving well-maintained and safe outdoor spaces requires precision planning and tactful execution to present an image worthy of these esteemed grounds.
Lastly, the critical zero-tolerance snow and ice policy leaves no room for error or delay when delivering winter services, either. Life-saving medical care demands clear, safe paths to that care 24/7, 365 days a year. Maintaining clear paths for healthcare providers and loved ones visiting patients is a constant concern.
Results
Mindful communication with university personnel, meticulous planning, and adaptive execution have made this project an ongoing success story, as the following results highlight.
- Pre-staging personnel alongside snow and ice equipment continue to meet the facility’s zero-tolerance snow and ice policy.

- No landscape service delays, despite the construction of a new tower becoming one of the largest expansions in recent university history.
- Comprehensive turf care program stands up to some of the heaviest foot traffic on any lawn in the country (over 1.81 million outpatient visits annually).
- The hospital’s environmental reputation remains in the highest regard, as sustainability informs many of our landscape decisions and actions.
- Patients, visitors, and staff are treated to positive sensory experiences through well-kept green spaces grown with care, while keeping human care top-of-mind.
- Everyone who steps foot on the property has outdoor opportunities ranging from shaded seating to children’s play areas to relaxing dining spaces.
- Window views of carefully chosen flowers and trees offer meditative moments even for those unable to venture outdoors.

Within Reach
Amazing things are happening inside this acclaimed medical facility filled with accomplished professionals and people in need of their care. We couldn’t be more proud to add outdoor amazement to the property knowing that it makes a positive impact even beyond those who touch the grass and smell the spring flowers in person.
This partnership blossomed through the two organizations’ stellar reputations, being a perfect match for one another. It keeps expanding with teamwork seeded by an alumnus moving from one iconic team to another great team in the landscape arena. This illustrious property is one that donors can be proud of, patients can depend on, and university leaders can point to as an ideal example of an eco- and people-friendly campus—where people have grounds for expecting good things to happen. A prime example of this is our annual participation in the Transplant Pinwheel Program. In April, over 12,000 pinwheels were planted, representing an organ transplant that has taken place at the hospital since the launch of the program in 1967. Our local crew is honored to plan, mark and install each pinwheel. A remarkable feat and ode to the thousands of lives saved through the program.
