As impressive as this state-of-the-art police and fire department training center is, there’s more than meets the eye on this property. Nearly 200 officers and fire and rescue staff train on one property, serving a growing community of 31,000 residents. The modern training is paying enormous dividends as the city has one of the lowest crime rates in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The property features five acres of well-planned landscaping that’s on par with top-tier residential properties, and features a hillside firing range and world-class K9 training center.
Challenges
This project presents two challenges that landscaping firms rarely have to work through. One was the highly-restricted access, which makes sense with critical police and firefighting training ongoing at the site. The second unique challenge was the safety issues of working next to the police firing range.
Scheduling maintenance is always a concern on a property with a busy schedule. This facility has ongoing training nearly every day that can’t be interrupted. The most interesting activity happens in the enclosed field where police service dogs are trained to be elite K9s. And landscape crews definitely can’t risk distracting the recruits and four-legged officers during their training.
Finally, expectations are lofty since North Texas is known for high-end aesthetics. Not only are there nearby luxury residential communities, but surrounding commercial properties also set the bar high on curb appeal. Those expectations can be derailed by Texas’s sudden storms damaging trees, and causing flooding or erosion.
Results
Yellowstone Landscape overcame each challenge one by one. Details of our landscaping strategies are below.
- Our branch manager worked with the client to create a simple system that allowed our crews access to each area while keeping security tight.
- To maximize safety with a firing range on-site, Yellowstone teams were given a tour of the facility so they understood which activities happened where.
- Understanding the property layout and having access to the facility’s training calendar helps ensure safety and unintrusive landscaping maintenance.
- With critical K9 training, our branch manager devised a tailored maintenance schedule that avoids any distractions to the service dogs.
- Having vast experience in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on multiple property types has prepared our crews to meet the elevated expectations.
- Storm clean-ups happen quickly as we have the workforce to handle emergency responses.
- Yellowstone Landscape’s full-time arborists do proactive tree inspections, which often prevents avoidable storm damage.
- Erosion from heavy rains is minimized by regular property inspections that often reveal drainage issues early.
- Installing native Texas plants suited to local soil and weather improves their odds of living longer, holding up to storms, and surviving droughts.

Protecting, Serving and Investing
Rare is the municipal space that’s on par with perfectly maintained HOA landscapes and retail green spaces. Budget constraints can be a roadblock to that ideal outcome. This property’s beauty and tidiness, though, are a testament to community leaders who want the best for the residents and its public servants. They understand curb appeal on public land is an investment that serves the community as a whole.
Yellowstone Landscape is privileged to partner in this noble effort. It goes deeper than adding vibrant flowers in the spring or edging crisp lines in the lush turf areas, though. Our company prides itself on training systems crafted over the past 20 years that help us maintain an array of property types. Working with this client has given us insights on innovative ways to enhance training even further.
What better profession than first responders to learn new safety initiatives and training tips? Our company is known for its robust training (e.g., safety, leadership, and landscaping methods). We often have clients ask for advice on designing training systems for their employees. In this case, it was nice to exchange ideas and learn from professionals who go to work every day knowing their actions can protect property and save lives.
