With a vision to reflect the concept of rebirth, our team employed innovative ideas that showcased metamorphosis through intricate design elements. This case study explores the landscape transformation and the creative strategies employed to maintain and enhance the allure of Reston Town Center.
Metamorphosis As A Design Concept
Reston Town Center's transformational journey was fueled by the idea of metamorphosis, symbolizing growth, renewal, and revitalization. To visually communicate this theme, we designed and custom-fabricated two "cocoons," which served as the centerpiece of the property's primary monument signs. These cocoons, evocative of transformation and change, became iconic symbols of the development's ongoing evolution.
The Butterfly Theme And Floral Design
The concept of metamorphosis extended to the installation of 300 butterfly kites within the property's open-air pavilion. The fluttering butterflies in flight created an enchanting spectacle that resonated with the theme of transformation. Complementing this spectacle, the landscape team employed synthetic turf that was meticulously reinstalled on an annual basis. This synthetic turf gave the impression of "soaring over a meadow," further enhancing the experiential landscape.
The dedicated landscape crew meticulously maintains over 300 hanging baskets, which are hand-watered and monitored daily and nightly. The creation of a dedicated nursery staging area with spare baskets allowed for flexibility in refreshing the floral displays. This innovative approach ensures that the property remains vibrant and appealing year-round.
Micro Climate Adaptation
The expansive nature of Reston Town Center gives rise to several diverse micro-climates across the property. Each micro-climate presented unique challenges and opportunities for creative landscaping solutions. The landscape design team embraced this challenge by tailoring their designs to the specific needs of each micro-climate. The result was an array of aesthetically pleasing and functional landscapes that catered to the diverse needs of the town center's visitors and occupants.
Integration of Corporate and Community Events
Reston Town Center's significance as a hub for internationally renowned corporations necessitated a robust security strategy. The Yellowstone landscape team contributed to this strategy by strategically placing over 100 bollard planters throughout the property. These planters served a dual purpose, combining functional security measures with pleasing aesthetics that enhanced the visitor and tenant experience.
As the town center expanded, neighboring office buildings incorporated shade sails into their outdoor courtyards. The landscape design team creatively transformed outdoor spaces into inviting "rooms" that offered flexibility to returning employees. The property also includes a central amphitheater where concerts and special events are held throughout the year. This integration of design elements showcased the adaptability and commitment to enhancing the experience of all who visited and worked at Reston Town Center.
